Zulieferer übernehmen inzwischen immer umfangreichere Aufgaben in der Entwicklung und Produktion, was zu neuen Herausforderungen im Projektmanagement führt. Nach VDA (2003) sind deshalb neue Formen der Zusammenarbeit zwischen Projektpartnern notwendig. Aus diesem Grund initiierten BMW und Daimler gemeinsam mit großen Zulieferern wie ZF Friedrichshafen, Karmann und Keiper beim ProSTEP iViP Verein die Erarbeitung einer Empfehlung zur unternehmensübergreifenden Zusammenarbeit in Entwicklungsprojekten, genannt „Collaborative Projekt Management (CPM)“. Wesentlicher Ansatzpunkt war dabei, dass jeder seine etablierten und eingespielten Projektmanagement-Prozesse beibehält. Vielmehr konzentriert sich das CPM Modell auf die Definition gemeinsamer Rollen, einer gemeinsamen Begriffswelt und Kommunikationsregeln sowie auf die notwendigen Prozesse und Methoden, um das Projekt unternehmensübergreifend synchronisieren und erfolgreich realisieren zu können. Ein weiterer wesentlicher Aspekt ist die Schaffung einer gemeinsamen Projektkultur. (vgl. dazu Abbildung 1.)
